Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Password fields are so 2010 (but keep them anyway): Magic links and passkeys are the future, but Aunt Martha still wants to type “Password123!” and feel like a hacker. Layer on the fancy stuff, but always provide that escape hatch.
  • Your login page is not your personal art gallery: Save the Three.js particle effects for your portfolio. If users need a fancy GPU to render your login form, you’ve already lost.
  • Social login buttons are not Pokémon — you don’t need them all: Three options good, fifteen options bad. Measure what your users actually use, then ruthlessly cull the rest. This isn’t a buffet.
  • Good start, but we promised seven commandments. So, here are some more principles of great login design:

  • Rate limiting…because some people can’t take a hint: Exponential backoff with a visible countdown timer. “You can try again in 14:59…” It’s security theater that actually works.
  • Error messages should actually help: “Invalid credentials” is useless. Be specific without helping hackers. For example, “Email not found” helps users. But “Password incorrect for john.doe@example.com” assists attackers.
  • Mobile users have thumbs, not surgical instruments: Make tap targets at least 44×44 pixels, use proper input types (type=”email” is your friend), and test with actual human thumbs.
  • Privacy isn’t optional anymore: Display privacy links and be transparent about data storage. Oh, and that “Remember me” switch shouldn’t mean “harvest my soul for targeted advertising.”
